Towards a new Yemen

Jameel Altheyabi

Without a doubt, history will remember the sacrifices of former Yemeni President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi for the sake of his country and his people. He had endured the horrors of the Yemeni succession of civil wars and political rivalries, until he ended up detained in his presidential palace headquarters in Sanaa, at the hands of the Houthi coup junta.

It is well known that Saudi Arabia had succeeded in saving the former president until he landed safely in Riyadh. Today, Hadi is making another great sacrifice for the sake of Yemen, as well as for the safety of its people, the stability of his country, and the reconciliation of its political and tribal components of society. By using the constitutional powers, he delegated the presidential powers to a Presidential Council, in which all the components of the Yemeni people are represented.

This is a move that should also be counted as a major success for the Yemeni-Yemeni Riyadh dialogue, which was held under the auspices of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). It is a dialogue that includes all Yemeni sects, except the Houthis, who abstained, being submissive to the dictates of its Iranian supporters, financiers and instigators.

It is hoped that the constitutional mandate issued by former President Hadi would lead to the desired integration between Yemeni factions and political forces. It is an ambition that must end with realizing peace in Yemen, as well as the recovery of its economy, and the return of normalcy to its people’s lives.

The Houthis will realize later that it has become an outcast, standing isolated while confronting all the active components on the Yemeni soil. They would have no way but to comply with the Yemeni popular will that calls for peace, apart from the collective effort for the reconstruction of the country. Otherwise, all these components would join hands to confront Houthis, and their unity will remove all those who obstruct the will of the Yemeni people.

Yemenis and those who love Yemen will continue to watch with great interest the outcome of the consultations of the legitimate Yemeni delegation, which was entrusted with the task of determining the controls and powers of the Presidential Council in a way ensuring the effective governance of this entity, which is the first of its kind in the history of Yemen.

Yemenis realize that Saudi Arabia will not go anywhere leaving them isolated but will always be by their side at all crucial junctures, and in confirmation of this, the Kingdom announced $2 billion in support of the Yemeni people. Also, Riyadh will mobilize the international community to hold a comprehensive economic conference to boost Yemen’s economy.

Today, Saudi Arabia shows utmost concern on restoring peace, solidarity, and a secure life in Yemen after bidding farewell to the state of war, fragmentation and miserable living conditions. It is an aspiration shared by Saudi Arabia with the United Arab Emirates and the peace-loving global powers, which consider reaching a political solution to the Yemeni crisis is the only way to realize the desired peace goals.

It is certain that there has been a new flexible collective leadership mechanism for Yemen, and it is representing all its active sectors. It is supposed to seek to enter into a serious and constructive dialogue with all Yemenis without any exception, including Houthis, and that is under the supervision of GCC and the United Nations.

This is to achieve a political and security solution, and whenever that comes closer to achieve, the Houthis squandered opportunities to achieve it as per the instructions of Iran, whose diabolical project, represents the greatest disaster that has befallen on the land of Yemen throughout its history until to date.
