Artificial intelligence in smartphones has the potential to create a more personalized experience for users from detecting your lifestyle and accommodating to your needs intelligently.

Huawei’s research and development developed artificial intelligence embedded in the “Kirin 970” processor in HUAWEI P20 Series that boosted Huawei in becoming one of the top players in the smartphone market.

Huawei’s Vice President of Tech Investment in Saudi Arabia Pablo Ning sheds some light on how AI technologies in smartphone processors have the potential to change the way phones are used.

Performance endurance

When it comes to performance, Huawei engineers looks to solve the problem of performance drop that users suffer from. To find out, they conducted simulation and compared between the Kirin 970 processor in new and used devices.

“They noticed the performance continuity as well as its increasing ability to understand users’ continuous use, where the AI technology plays a role in the processor to customize machine learning technology for each user by monitoring their use, and learning to predict their behaviors to enhance the levels of memory use and customization by using a set of different mechanisms such as: customization of resources, CPU management, memory management, operating time, input and output processes management, storage management, defragmentation and battery management,” said Ning.

Battery life for days

Battery life and energy consumption are today’s users’ top priority. Not having to charge the phone for days is now a reality with AI.

HUAWEI Mate 10 Series was the first intelligent series in the market to build energy management system powered by AI technology, enabling the device to understand what is important to the user, making the device monitor, enhance and prioritize energy management first in regard to what it’s been selected.

To prevent battery life wastage and maximizing its use, it understands users’ behavior patterns to deal with energy overconsumption, enhance and customize the device’s resources.

The processor identifies the main four patterns for users and they are: photographers, businessmen, travelers and gamers, then divides these four patterns also based on users’ interests in news, information and mobile apps in 14 different fields.

And according to the characteristics of these users, the NPU automatically sets the best energy consumption settings. For instance, mobile gamers, usually, like to play with specific audio and brightness levels – which can sometimes cause the device to overheat. Therefore, with smart energy management, HUAWEI P20 Series adapts to support apps of heavy energy consumption. Furthermore, if the phone’s temperature reaches 55 ° C or the internal temperature reaches 60 ° C, the battery management feature supported by artificial intelligence technology turns the phone off automatically, providing users with maximum safety and security.

Mastering the perfect selfie

The average smartphone user is looking for a flattering selfie and prefers a filtered photo, which smartphone manufacturers have been focusing on.

The HUAWEI P20 Series features a 24 MP selfie camera with AI beautification feature and a 3D portrait light. The result is healthy-looking skin tone adjustments, delicately outlined face details and 3D feature enhancements.

AI also made professional photography easier, such as Real-Time Scene and Object Recognition and a dedicated ISP and color temperature sensor for better coloring.

Just point your camera to a flower and the AI will recognize the object. “Object recognition makes it easier for the device to automatically adjust and choose settings to help users capture better photographs in a range of different environments, and as soon as the background is identified, the new Leica triple camera sets the color, contrast, brightness and exposure automatically to produce the best image possible,” said Ning.
